Whether in midsummer on hot asphalt, in pouring rain or in winter on snow-covered paths – shoes and materials are exposed to extreme conditions in everyday life. To ensure that they provide reliable protection, remain comfortable and last a long time, manufacturers must thoroughly test their products before they enter the market. This is exactly where climate testing in the laboratory comes into play.
What are climate tests?
Climate tests simulate the wide variety of environmental conditions that materials or products may encounter in everyday use. These include, in particular:
- Temperature changes: from extreme heat to freezing cold
- Humidity: dry conditions or high humidity
- Combination of both: realistic scenarios such as tropical climates or winter use
In the testing laboratory, these conditions are simulated in special climate chambers – in a controlled, reproducible and independent manner. This reveals how robust and durable a product really is.
Why are climate tests so important?
Absolute reliability is particularly important for outdoor and work footwear . Material failure during use can be not only annoying, but also a safety hazard. Climate testing helps manufacturers identify potential weak points at an early stage:
- Deformation when exposed to heat
- Material breakage or embrittlement when exposed to cold
- Adhesives detaching when exposed to moisture
- Restrictions on functionality (e.g. slip resistance or protective effect)
The result: only products that can withstand extreme conditions make it onto the market.
What materials are being tested?
Both complete shoes and individual materials can be tested in the physics laboratory:
- Leather and textiles
- Sole materials
- Plastics and adhesives
- Functional materials (e.g. water-repellent membranes)
This provides manufacturers with valuable information about every detail – from the durability of the upper material to the stability of the entire construction.
Climate testing as a contribution to sustainability
In addition to quality and safety, climate testing also contributes to sustainability: the longer shoes remain in use, the fewer resources are needed for replacement products. This means less waste, less energy consumption and greater customer satisfaction.
