Research project on barefoot shoes – helping to shape the future and set standards

Barefoot shoes are all the rage – but how safe, comfortable and sustainable are they really? The Pirmasens Testing and Research Institute (PFI) is planning a research project on barefoot shoes to investigate precisely these questions scientifically. The project is currently in the application phase – and we are looking for committed partners to secure funding and advance the research together.

Why a research project on barefoot shoes?

Barefoot shoes differ significantly from conventional footwear: they offer more intense contact with the ground and greater freedom of movement, but often lack protective functions against cold, punctures or wetness.
To date, there is a lack of reliable data on:

  • Safety:protection against weather, injuries and slipping hazards
  • Quality & durability:long-term resilience in everyday use
  • Pollutant exposure:relevance, as they are often worn barefoot
  • Wearing comfort & hygiene:long-term suitability for everyday use
  • Sustainability:recyclability and environmentally friendly production

The project aims to comprehensively evaluate these points and, where necessary, develop new testing methods and standards.

Advantages for participants:

As a partner in the project committee, you will receive:

  • Early insight into research results
  • Direct access to new testing and evaluation criteria
  • Opportunity to contribute your expertise
  • Knowledge advantage for product development and market access

Your support can be financial, technical or organisational – any form of support helps to realise the project.

Kick-off at the Barefoot European Shoe Fair

The first opportunity to present the research project on barefoot shoes was at the Barefoot European Shoe Fair in Offenbach (31 July–3 August 2025).
As Europe's first trade fair dedicated exclusively to barefoot and minimalist shoes, it brought together over 70 exhibitors with around 80 brands – from models for women, men and children to trekking and safety shoes. On the trade visitor days, manufacturers, retailers, developers and trade visitors engaged in intensive discussions on trends, material innovations and foot health.

Our team – represented by Dr. Ines Anderie, Liselotte Vijselaar, Steffen Eichhorn and CEO Michael Tackenberg – provided information on legal requirements, quality tests and training opportunities in presentations and discussions. There was particular interest in questions about certification, safety in cold and wet conditions, and the durability of barefoot shoes.

The trade fair made it clear: the industry needs scientifically sound criteria – which is precisely the goal of our planned project.

You can find impressions of our trade fair appearance here.
