But the technology is capable of much more: modern additive manufacturing processes make it possible to print directly onto textiles, leather and other materials used in the footwear industry. This opens up new possibilities for design, functionality and production processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-white-color has-custom-pfi-farbverlauf-gradient-background has-text-color has-background\" style=\"border-radius:10px;padding-top:0.5rem;padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-bottom:0.5rem;padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);font-size:clamp(0.875rem, 0.875rem + ((1vw - 0.2rem) * 0.375), 1.1rem);\"><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>More than just a printing process<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In direct 3D printing on materials, designs, patterns or relief structures are built up layer by layer. Unlike traditional 2D printing processes, this creates structures that can be both seen and felt, giving the product a completely new visual and tactile effect. This enables, for example<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>decorative trims<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>customised surface textures<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>functional elements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>lacing components or reinforcements<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">can be applied directly to the material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This opens up new opportunities, particularly for the footwear industry, to design products that are more personalised and innovative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-white-color has-custom-pfi-farbverlauf-gradient-background has-text-color has-background\" style=\"border-radius:10px;padding-top:0.5rem;padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-bottom:0.5rem;padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);font-size:clamp(0.875rem, 0.875rem + ((1vw - 0.2rem) * 0.375), 1.1rem);\"><strong>Challenge: High costs of established systems<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PolyJet 3D printers are now frequently used for high-end applications. Whilst these deliver excellent print results, they involve high capital and running costs. In addition, there are often mandatory maintenance contracts and ongoing software costs. For many small and medium-sized enterprises, these factors present a significant hurdle \u2013 particularly in the early stages of development, when new ideas and designs need to be tested first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-white-color has-custom-pfi-farbverlauf-gradient-background has-text-color has-background\" style=\"border-radius:10px;padding-top:0.5rem;padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-bottom:0.5rem;padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);font-size:clamp(0.875rem, 0.875rem + ((1vw - 0.2rem) * 0.375), 1.1rem);\"><strong>Our approach: Affordable technology for innovation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At PFI, we are therefore aiming to achieve comparable results using significantly more cost-effective FDM (Fused Deposition Modelling) printing systems. In doing so, we are deliberately focusing on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>affordable hardware<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>open-source software<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>flexible development environments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>independent process design<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The use of open-source solutions makes it possible to avoid licence and subscription fees whilst remaining independent of individual software providers. This aspect is becoming increasingly important, particularly at a time of rising costs and growing dependence on proprietary systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-white-color has-custom-pfi-farbverlauf-gradient-background has-text-color has-background\" style=\"border-radius:10px;padding-top:0.5rem;padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-bottom:0.5rem;padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);font-size:clamp(0.875rem, 0.875rem + ((1vw - 0.2rem) * 0.375), 1.1rem);\"><strong><strong><strong>Improving production efficiency<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our development work focuses on the direct printing of textiles and leather. The aim is to apply three-dimensional structures directly to materials ready for processing. For example, this allows that<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>patterns and design elements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>functional reinforcements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>fastening and lacing systems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>customised appliqu\u00e9s<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">be produced in a single manufacturing step. W\u00e4hrend klassische Fertigungsprozesse h\u00e4ufig aus zahlreichen Einzeloperationen bestehen, kann der Direktdruck verschiedene Funktionen in einem einzigen Maschinenlauf integrieren. Das spart Zeit, reduziert den Materialeinsatz und er\u00f6ffnet neue M\u00f6glichkeiten f\u00fcr eine effizientere Produktion. Insbesondere f\u00fcr die wenigen verbliebenen Schuhhersteller in Deutschland kann dies ein wichtiger Baustein sein, um Entwicklungs- und Produktionskosten zu senken und gleichzeitig innovative Produkte auf den Markt zu bringen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-white-color has-custom-pfi-farbverlauf-gradient-background has-text-color has-background\" style=\"border-radius:10px;padding-top:0.5rem;padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-bottom:0.5rem;padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);font-size:clamp(0.875rem, 0.875rem + ((1vw - 0.2rem) * 0.375), 1.1rem);\"><strong><strong><strong>Initial results are promising<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our work is currently still at an early stage of development. However, the first test applications have already been successfully implemented and demonstrate the potential of the method.
