Method and Process Development<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Use of new substrates\u00a0in biogas generation,\u00a0testing of innovative processing approaches, or\u00a0evaluation of the efficacy of additives\u00a0\u2013 these and similar complex questions call for customised approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Numerous pilot and demonstration plants, e.g. for pretreatment and fermentation, installed in our engineering laboratory serve for testing of a wide range of biomass utilisation applications under close-to-real-world conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Development<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The research activities of PFI Biotechnology have culminated in the development of pretreatment and fermentation processes which have been implemented on an industrial scale in pilot plants.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\n

TPH Pilot Plant<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Together with the Wastewater Disposal Department of the City of Pirmasens, PFI Biotechnology has built a pilot plant for\u00a0Thermal Pressure Hydrolysis (TPH)\u00a0of activated sludge with the following specifications:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n
    \n
  • Treatment of 10,000 t\/a of activated sludge (6 to 7 % dry matter)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Treatment temperature 140 to 160 \u00b0C (maximum 200 \u00b0C) attained by utilisation of waste heat from a cogeneration plant by way of heat transfer oil (180 to 220 \u00b0C)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • 70 % heat recovery through combination of sludge input heating with heat from sludge recooling<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Reaction section to guarantee a residence time of 0.5 to 2 h (depending upon the delivery rate of sludge) at the set treatment temperature<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Use of dynamic heat exchangers (scraped surface heat exchangers) to prevent fouling on the heat exchanger surfaces
    (\u0394T up to 100 \u00b0C)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Disintegration of the sludge by pressure release through a special pressure control valve (pressure drop from 24 bar to atmospheric pressure is possible)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    The experience gained from operation of the pilot plant can be applied to other locations and sludges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n

    Process-controlled Enzymatic Hydrolysis (PEH)<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In collaboration with agriculturist Peter Neumann, PFI has built a pretreatment unit for agricultural biomass\u00a0(maize, grass, and whole-crop cereal silage)\u00a0at the W\u00fcrschhauserhof Farm biogas plant in the vicinity of Wallhalben.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The facility for\u00a0process-controlled enzymatic hydrolysis (PEH)\u00a0is designed for operation under the following conditions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Treatment of 7,000 t\/a of silage (30 to 35 % dry matter)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Treatment temperature 30 to 60 \u00b0C\u00a0at pH values of 4 to 6<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • batch operation with a residence time of two days<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Hydraulic residence time of the biomass less than 35 days (less than 20 days after optimisation through addition of enzymes)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
